Belarusian Alexander Choupenitch becomes world fencing champion
World fencing champion Alexander Shupenich turned out to be Belarusian / Tribuna
32-year-old fencer Alexander Choupenitch, competing for the Czech Republic, has won a gold medal at the World Championship for the first time in his career. In the final of the tournament in Hong Kong, the athlete confidently defeated Italian Filippo Macchi with a score of 15:2 and became the new world title holder.
Alexander Shupenich was born into a family of Belarusian opera performers Ivan and Iryna Choupenitch, who later moved to the Czech Republic. Despite competing under the Czech flag, the athlete maintains a connection to his family's Belarusian roots.
Prior to his World Championship victory, Shupenich had already achieved notable success on the international stage. He is a bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, and has also won bronze medals at the European Fencing Championships twice.
