Russian oligarch plans to build a new factory in Homiel
Dmitry Mazepin
Russian billionaire Dmitry Mazepin plans to build a new fertilizer plant in Belarus. The facility will produce water-soluble fertilizers.
“The plant will be built on the basis of the Homiel Chemical Plant. These are specialized fertilizers used in greenhouses. Over the next two years, our company, Uralchem, will invest in and build this enterprise,” Mazepin said, according to Belarusian state television.
In August 2020, the businessman, whose main assets are located in Russia, spoke out against violence in Belarus and proposed creating a “Belarus National Salvation Committee.” At the time, the Belarusian authorities immediately linked him to the alleged financing of mass protests. Judging by recent developments, however, that episode appears to have been forgotten.
On June 3, Mazepin met with Aliaksandr Lukashenka. During the meeting, Lukashenka said that “a wealthy person should work for their homeland.” Mazepin was born in Minsk.
